UK smokers - wood chunks supply

Post  irish_admiral on Sat Apr 10, 2010 4:37 pm

Hi guys

If - like me - you'd been wondering where to get a plentiful supply of wood chunks for your BBQ for a decent price, I stumbled across my local firewood suppliers (south-east Wales) who do landscaping, forestry etc. They had boxes and boxes of oak & beech logs, and the odd apple and cherry tree around the yard.

They were able to chop it to logs, or chip it if I wanted, and I walked off with a big string bag of oak logs for a fiver, which i've cut down to roughly 1.5" cubed chunks at home with a hatchet and saw, and stripped the bark off.

Basically, i'm set for the summer for oak, apple, cherry and beech.

So... if you were struggling with that question too, a speculative email to your local landscaper might pay some dividends.

We (by "we" I actually mean my pensioner father) dug out an old apple tree from the garden last week. He's kept most of the wood for his log burning fire, but a couple of logs have been put at the back of my garage to season for a year or so, to be used on the smoker when it's nice and dry.

In the meantime, I've taken up woodworking, and make as much as I can right now from cherry. It looks good, it's easy to work, and the offcuts are all destined for my smoker! But the next time I visit the sawmill I'll have to ask them to put aside some of their beech and oak offcuts for me.

It's a definite winner. I've got a big sack of oak logs which sawed and then split into good sized chunks for the smoker.

I need to find some cherry.

What do you rate better... cherry or apple?
