Post  Mack on Mon Jun 29, 2009 7:11 am

Guys, I have 4 brand new Excel 20's that I borught in to check the upgrades for 2010.
The main differences are:

  1. Fully porcelain coated - Base, stackers and lid.
  2. New packaging
Please contact me on ian@macsbbq , if you would be interested in buying one (UK only).

Do you feel the porcelain coating will increase efficiency? Or is it more of a rust proofing feature?

I'm in the U.S. so I can't buy one of your smokers. But I am thinking about getting one from a guy on EBay. Obviously I want the latest model but how do I tell if it's the new version or one of the older ones? They are the cheapest around at only $200 including shipping. The ad says he has more than 10 of them and I'm thinking he got the older version on some sort of closeout deal and that's how he can afford to sell them so cheaply. What question(s) should I ask this guy to find out if it's the older model or a new one? Is there a number change somewhere on the box or is the packaging somehow different between the two? Hopefully he will be able to tell the difference. I'd rather pay a little more for the changes you listed. Thanks for the info.

Hi Bruce,

The units
that are being sold on Ebay and Craigslist are part of stock sold on auction
when our previous distributor went bankrupt. We supplied them with enough of
the new style legs to cover all of the units they had in stock, but
unfortunately have no idea of what they did with them, as some of the units
being sold come with the new legs and others not. The Excels that are being
offered, are at a price that is well below the normal retail of $350.00, so are
a bargain, but please bear in mind that there is no warranty on these units and
they also differ from the new models(such as the one we brand for Napoleon in
Canada), in that the new models are now completely porcelain coated.

If you do decide to purchase a cooker off Ebay or
Craigslist (which are hard to pass up on at those prices) and find that the
legs are not the new braced ones, I would suggest looking at the Arizona BBQ
Forum where one of their members made up a set of legs, HERE.

Hi Mack,

Thanks very much for the info. I just can't afford the regular price of the Excel 20 right now but it's hard to pass up $200 for one. Bummer about having no warranty. I guess there aren't really any moving parts other than the vents and from looking at the pictures on Ebay the smokers have the reinforced legs. I may even spring for the 3 stacker model. The seller said it would be an extra $40 to $60. Sounds like a good deal right now but I have found some old ads where they were going for a bit less than that.

On another topic, any idea about how I could go about getting a vinyl cover with the ProQ label on it? I haven't found anyone who sells them. If not that, do you know of another brand of cover that will fit easily all the way to the ground, (Or at least covering the bottom dome)? Thanks again.

Bruce

Hi Bruce,
No problem, hope you get a good deal on one.
On the cover... send a PM to Toby, he should be able to sort one out for you.
