Cheap Probe Thermometers at Amazon
Now this is no Maverick ET-73 but if you want an extra meat probe only thermometer at less than £5 it might be worth a punt. I've never seen one cheaper, Amazon are saying 77% of RRP. I know the zyliss brand quite well and their stuff is generally good

Cheers

Re: Cheap Probe Thermometers at Amazon
These sell for $15.00 to $25.00 on Amazon stateside. Only one review on it (not a very good review), but the complaint was that it's not very intuitive. Then again, it's not made for rocket science.
Re: Cheap Probe Thermometers at Amazon
Yeah one review in UK too saying the timer function was not great. I don't care about that to be honest, if it gives me a read out of temp that's all I care about. I've got my Mavericks as primary devices along with a little PIC project I'm knocking together which will report chamber and pit temps across my home network and let me monitor remotely from my iPhone.
These will probe more items at once, I'm thinking useful for the BBBQS comp in May when I might have four things on the go at one time. I've ordered two, at £5 each it's worth taking a chance on them I think.

At that price, I can't blame you. I pick-up little 'cheapies' at the super-center in town. They last for most of a season before biting the dust.steveheyes wrote:Yeah one review in UK too saying the timer function was not great. Jack of all trades, eh? Pitmaster, chef, web designer, logo creator, app developer...that's pretty awesome! Maybe you can get the iPhone app put together and market it!? There's a company over here (Rock's BBQ) that has a unit called The Stoker that does kind of the same thing...though I don't know if it works on iPhone. Check 'em out at http://rocksbarbque.com

That stoker is a cool device. You guys have all hte best toys. I'm knocking somehting similar together but on a much simpler level and it won't look anywhere near as pretty.
My job is as a software engineer working on radio systems for Police, Fire Brigade, Ambulance Service etc. So knocking together gadgets and doing any kind of saftware is what I'm good at. Cooking has been my hobby for a long time and that's what I'm passionate about, turning that passion to Q has been a revelation for me because cooking on a real buel burning oven is just great.
I quite like that Stoker device, I really should just buy one of those but it wouldn't be half as much fun Do you know if the Stoker is a popular device? If it is when I do my iPhone front end app I'll happily convert it to work on the Stoker's web server for anyone who wants it (if and when I find the time).

Re: Cheap Probe Thermometers at Amazon
Yeah, I think it's pretty popular. Not as popular as The BBQ Guru, but for those not afraid of the technology, it is well liked. The biggest draw back to The Stoker is that it does take some basic knowledge of how networks and computers work...not as easy as The BBQ Guru (just plug and play). I'm not the brightest on the computer network, but would love to try one out. If you had an app to run on iPhone, it could go over well!steveheyes wrote:That stoker is a cool device. Follow up
My two thermometers arrived this morning. Typical zyliss, seem good quality with silicone probe wires rated to 480f. Control is iPod style wheel, fairly responsive but with an annoying beep for every setting. However at five quid each I think they are a bargain!
