new guy from north carolina

Post  smoke51 on Sat Jan 03, 2009 3:09 pm

where do i start? there are a few names i see here that i recognize from another forum but most everyone on here is from the other side of the pond from me. i think its cool that people on basically opposite sides of the world cook the same things using the same equipment and have the same reactions to new toys that come out and new recipes that people come up with.

i live in charlotte, nc and work at an automotive transmission shop, and ive always loved cooking. my parents used to think i was gay when i was like 4 because the only thing i would play with was my sisters easy-bake oven and her playschool kitchen set. little did they know that in twenty years they would be eating the best pulled pork that they had ever had...haha. and my girlfriend thinks im a total nerd because i am looking at this forum or another forum all day long when im cooking and most nights for an hour or so....but what does she know. she likes my bbq and i got everything i know from forums.

my dad bought me an excel 20 for christmas this year and im still trying to get the hang of it so that i can knock down some 12 hour cooks on a load of charcoal.

I had to LOL reading your post, it hits WAY too close to home! Laughing

From one Yank to another...Welcome to the forum!

Though most of my cooking is done in larger quanities, on a different smoker, I have cooked on (and thoroughly enjoyed) the ProQ Excel 20...Mack did good on this one!

Your girlfriend and my wife would probably agree on the barbeque forum issues; but if you think your gf thinks you 'nerdy' now, what will she think when she finds you surfing for food 'porn' at all hours of the day and night?? affraid clown Laughing

Again, welcome to the group...they're a great bunch of people with big hearts.

best of luck. I bought my excel 20 this year, and did my first comp in october. Now im no southerner, but i can make some damn good que. Youll love the excel, a little foil tape at the seams, and the thing will hold temps for 16+ hours, also, try using sand in the pan, you are gonna love it.

this is the same one i use on the smoke ring

thanks guys, i might have to get some foil tape and try that out...i think there are some leaks between the sections at the bottom, no biggie but ill have to try it out. i just dont want the glue from the tape to melt and stick to my pretty new excel and make a mess of everything

i wonder if i could use a really long magnet....ive seen strips of magnets that are flexible in hardware stores before. i wonder if they would melt.

I would try it with sand in the pan 1st, I can't imagine that the gaps are that large, as to affect the fire too much.
