Different Temperature Readings Empty Different Temperature Readings

Post  AnvilHead Mon Apr 07, 2008 9:08 pm

I have a concern about the bi-metal thermometer in the lid of the frontier........... I used the redicheck digital thermometer during my first smoke with the smoker probe at the cooking grate and the food probe through the top vent positioned at the same height as the lid probe see the link below which clearly shows the difference in readings. Do i have a faulty lid probe or has anyone else noticed the same thing ????? is this a fault whith the bi-metal type temp probes ?????

I should add that i did check the temp with a different digital thermometer and it gave the same result as the redicheck.

Casper, this is the method Mack gave me for calibrating the lid thermometer, I have not tried it myself as I would rather rely on the redicheck which i think is a more acurate method.

Macks instuctions......... "You are able to calibrate the lid thermometer, remove it from the lid, then using a small spanner to hold the nut on the back of the dial, then turn the actual dial. With the probe in boiling water, it should be set to 212 deg F."

Hope you find this helpfull.

Different Temperature Readings Empty Re: Different Temperature Readings

Post  Burbs Mon Nov 10, 2008 11:18 am

I'm having an issue with my Frontier built in thermometer. I put one of those "candy" ones through the vents and it said I was over 220 F, but the built in one kept saying I was stuck at 210 F.

Has anyone installed a Tru Temp, or similar thermometer? I'm starting to think that this Pro Q one is not of the best quality.

Thanks,

-Chris

Hi Chris, you'll find a few threads on thermometer accuracy on the forum, (as above) you need to calibrate it, but you will find a variation on temps within the smoker anyway. The same probe may give you different readings depending on it's position within the smoker. I bought a redicheck remote smoker & it's fantastic (as a few of the guys on the forum will agree), however I was surprised at how accurate the built in one in the frontier is when you compare over the period of a cook. Sometimes the thermometers are bang on the same as each other, at other times 15f out, but overall they run pretty close. I would recommend the remote thermometer as you can also monitor your food temp at the same time, but don't chuck out the lid thermometer just yet, you will find it useful the more you get to know your smoker.

Don't give up on it just yet Chris. Due to shipping, you may have to calibrate the built-in thermometer. I did and it works just fine now. I done a lot of cooks and do find that you will want to use another one to "verify". I'm looking at one for inserting into the meat myself! You will love what comes out of your smoker. NO OTHER smoker has what ProQ has, you won't be disappointed. Smile

I agree Jenks,

If you guys are thinking buying external probes I can vouch for these:

I have deliberately pasted that link in because the link in this post is no longer valid:
