Maverick ET-73 Dual Probe Thermometer

All Weather Griiller and myself have both ordered one of these units ........ they look the dogs dangly bits to us has anyone used one or if not used anything similar and did you find it usefull ?

We will post our findings when we have tested them.

I use one all the time, have been for the last year... excellent products!

That's one that I use too. It doesn't quite get to my office (it doesn't update the remote frequesnt enough there, or loses contact) but when I have it in the kitchen pointing towards the base unit, it works great.

This looks good, have you received it yet? were there any difficulties getting it shipped from the states & did the shipping work out cost effective?

Yep recieved it no probs it took about 5 days to come, All Weather Griller and myself both ordered one together to save shipping costs we have used them severval times without any problems. They are very good units that take any guess work out of the cooking and intenal temps.
My only slight critisism would be the on off switch of the sender unit........ it is underneath the battery cover so you have remove the cover to turn it on and off......... I cant see any logical reason for that, but other than that I cant fault them.

That's the part I least enjoy, I've met the owner several times, but keep on forgetting to ask him about it other than that it is an excellent unit.

Not yet, I did my first cook over the weekend (fantastic), & I will feel a lot happier when i get one. I used the lid thermometer & a meat probe thermometer poking through the top vent, the readings varied a fair bit. I had calibrated them, (possibly not very well), but maybe you are not meant to use a meat probe this way .
The food turned out just fantastic, so all is good, but if I get time I have every intention to order that thermometer this week.

I use them (and sell them). Our comp team normally has 4 or 5 of them running right beside each other with no cross talk between units.

Switch is under the cover so it will be waterproof. There is a seal on the cover.

It works out at $44.95 for the unit & $25.00 for shipping ($69.95 total). This worked out at £37 after exchange rate conversion. I only got round to ordering it on Saturday just gone, so I'm still waiting for it to arrive. I did baby back ribs with the 3,2,1 method at the weekend & they were good, but slightly on the well done side, I think I'm running the Frontier a bit hotter than the lid & meat thermometers are registering. I've tried calibrating both a couple of times, but the temperatures varied a fair amount at some points, & at other times they were close, so i'll be glad to get a more accurate measure. 3.2.1 is way too long for baby backs, but fine for spares.

The 3-2-1 method is a rough ballpark estimate, even for spares. I normally cook spares at 3-1.5-1 , works well for me. But there are many varibles to say that will work in your smoker, so practice is the best answer. I believe the length of time in the foil is the hardest part to get down, because it is very easy to over do it, and you can't see whats going in in there.
I do not do babybacks very often, but when I do, I will shoot for 3-1-1. I suggest giving that a try next time, see if it works for you.

I think there are many variations, but the idea is, 3hrs in the smoker basting occasionally, 2 hrs in tin foil (still in the smoker), & then another 1hr in the smoker out of foil. If you look at the recipe for spare ribs on the Proq site that is what it is based on. I did it thinking it was ok for baby back ribs, but I guess it is aimed at spare ribs which have more meat. I'll pay more attention next time

I think for baby backs its 2-1-1 or 2-2-1 (can't remember exactly) 3-2-1 is for spares, they have more fat so can take the longer cook.

3 hours in smoke
2 hours in foil
1 hours back in smoke(or some wont return to smoke and use it for rest time.)

its a rule of thumb for spares ribs.. adjust for other stuff for example, babybacks to 3-1-.5 etc...

Mine arrived from the US about a week after I ordered it. I have to say that it appears to be more accurate than the Webber one I have as well as configurable which was a royal pain with Webber.

I did see them in UK stock from www.essentialbbq.co.uk but it seems to have gone from the site so I guess I'll have to order one from the US.
