I was thinking of getting a spare temp gauge like the one in the lid ao I can monitor the lower shelf too. Was thinking of basically drilling a hole in the middle of the door and adding it there so if I screw something up I can at least just get a spare door to fix it. Sound like a good idea?

Mac, how much for a spare temp gauge (and a door just in case Embarassed )?

Not a bad idea with using it on the door but be careful of the placement so that the probe dosen't hit the side when you open it. How about placing it away from the door ( less chance of a warpage and a draft giving you bad readings) then if it's not what you want you can just plug it with a stainless nut and bolt.

Roxy,
I don't think the std "lid" guage would work, as it has a pretty short stem on it, so it would more than likely give you a very high reading as it will be measuring the hot air that flows up around the side... this may lead you to think that the unit at temps ideal for "crisperizing" the skin of your yardbird, when in fact you may be making rubber.

If you still want to give it a go, I'll send the items over.

I agree with you Ian, that is why I recommended a digital grate thermometer from Maverick. Click on my link and you will see what I mean.

Hey Ian.. You should know I got more thermometers that I do cookers.. Wink

But I do recommend that maverick to any one looking to get accurate grate level cooking temps. That thing is a real nice unit.

Not really.. Wink I need to have like 5 or 6 for comp as I tend to run 4 cookers for all the different meat that are cooked.

I picked up an extra 3 units last fall when they were clearing out the BBQ stock. I think I paid like $10.00 a piece. Cool
