smoker buying advice

Post  skinnej on Thu May 01, 2008 10:21 am

I am new to smoking and require advice on which model to buy, have been looking at weber smoky mountain, and pro q frontier, understand the weber is slightly better quality but prefer the features of the pro q, is it worth spending extra on pro q excel,ie is the build quality significantly better than frontier and how does it compare with smoky mountain.Have never seen any of these items in the flesh and would be making my purchase online.Any advice greatly appreciated. I would go with the ProQ Excel.

As for quality it's simply one of those things that suits your needs ( sorta like a relationship). If you take good care of your equipment then it will last you for years.

You have to look at how it's made and I think the Pro looks like a quality bit of gear and I can see no parts that look flimsy/cheap. Keep it and any other equipment stored properly and half the battle is won.

Hi and welcome Skinnej,
As you say you are "new to smoking" I think you would be fine with either the Frontier, Excel or even the Weber Smokey Mountain, but the Excel is definitely the pick of the crop. All of the units are simple to use and therefore ideal for people who would like to start smoking.
Be warned though, that this is a highly addictive pastime and that you may end up like the Doc, DM or myself ... having no control over your new habit and finding it extremely difficult to avoid buying new BBQ toys.

Whatever you decide, you've come to right place, as there are great people with patience and skill to help guide you on here.

As a WSM owner I would say that the Pro Q brand is a better Value for money with features that exceed this of the WSM.

Buy a smoker ONLY if you have an understanding partner. It can take over Embarassed
