Probe / eyelet issue
Hello All: I've smoked several briskets here in Texas using the Excel, with excellent results, but I have an issue that hopefully y'all can help me with. I purchased the Maverick ET73 and it worked great...except...I couldn't fit the probes through the eyelets?!
I had to run both the smoker probe and the meat probe out of the front door, which made it complicated to transfer the brisket to the cooler to finish and crimped the probe wires. Am I missing something, or are the eyelets just not big enough?
Any help on how you have your own set up or how to fix the problem would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Re: Probe / eyelet issue
Yu can squeeze the crimped part at the end of the probe a little (carefully) and they'll fit. But you are right, they don't fit straightout of the box.

Crimp, or file them down slightly. I've only had one set that went through stright out the box.

I have the same problem. The Maverick-probes don't fit at all. The inner metal of the eyelet seems to be warped a bit. I thought about drilling it slightly but I'm afraid that might disconnect the inside and outside part...
This is on a Frontier, btw.

Simply add new eyelets to your smoker. I received a tip for using speaker jacks as eyelets and they work perfectly. They can be had for about 1.50 each via you local music store.

Re: Probe / eyelet issue
Hi
If I want to fit larger eyelets, what's the best way to drill the Excel without damaging the ceramic lining?
Is it possible to contact the ProQ manufacturer and find out where they get their eyelets from and see if they make larger ones?
Cheers
Ken

Re: Probe / eyelet issue
My ET 73 probes pass through the eyelets of my Frontier OK and I usually manage to have two braided cables in the same eyelet. However, my ET 73 is reading way off [around 15C low for both probes] and the range sucks so I have just ordered an ET 733.
