excel hot plate
After using the hot plate on my gas bbq,I wondered how to get the same effect on my excel smoker.Being in the engineering trade I gas/oxy cut a circle out of 6mm plate and ran 2 runs of weld around its edge to create a lip.I then warmed the plate up with the oxy/gas lamp until it was well hot and rubbed in cooking oil (this creates non stick surface) allowed it to cool .I now have a hot plate you place directly ontop of the coals (first level grill).Excelent for breakfasts, steaks and grilling veg

Ah, gas torches... How I miss you (stuck with a good mig outfit now that I dont have a workshop anymore..)
Sounds like a plan! I have a slab of cast iron (skillet one side and griddle the other) but its rectangular so wont fit..
Thought about a pizza stone to give me a nice flat surface but never taken it further than thinking...

Re: excel hot plate
Clearly this has piqued my interest given that I use my Frontier for smoking and grilling (mmm T-Bone!)...
Had a hunt around and came across http://www.cast-iron-grate.com/store/cast-iron-grate-185-c-4.html which is tempting; was toying with buying a Weber clone for grilling but may invest the money in a cast iron grill instead..
Anyone ever bought one and how did you find it?
