Scotch egg

Post  bowhnter on Sun Dec 02, 2007 5:17 pm

Just a pretty picture, and mighty fine breakfast.

Hard boiled egg wrapped in Owens hot sausage, smoked for 1 to 1/2 hrs.

And a fine breakfast it is.

Hey Mike, have you ever smoked any thick sliced bacon? I have cooked some up on my grill, but never did any up on the smoker; I was wondering how long to cook it since I can't get a temp probe into it.

I would guess about 3 beers should do it.

This inspired me at a recent contest to cook up some fatties and Scotch Eggs. Wow, were they good. I could only find one other person at the contest who had even heard of Scotch Eggs...keep in mind I'm in the U.S....made up 5 of 'em and they didn't last long enough to get pictures.

Thanks for the idea!

Here is my attempt. Lincolnshire sausages to get the sausagemeat and then I rolled them in some rub I had left over from doing some pork fillets last week. Hickory for smoke. Very tasty indeed and i'll definitely do them again. Shame a few of them split but in a way that adds to the presentation and they taste just as good.

Great pics mike!

I'll have to try this for a nice breakfast with toast. Adam, I bet you had a lot of fun and great food after that test run. You guys are making me hungry.

I think we need a new name!

A Scotch egg is not a Scotch egg unless it is rolled in crumbs and fried in lard - LOLs!!!

you coud also smoke the egg and sausage, let it cool then coat with breadcrumbs and deepfry till golden . try with a good mexican green chilli sauce and tortillas. serve pico de gallo, guacamole, lettuce and sour cream on the side if you wish.

I did exactly that just over a year ago, it's time to revisit.

Pico de gallo is going to be tough to come by over here. I have half a bottle left and can't stop dusting mangos with it. cyclops
