Thermometer Question
My Weber Kettle does'nt come with a thermometer could somebody please advise, I was thinking of buying one of those digital ones where you stick the probe in the meat but instead of doing that I was going to just let the probe hang through the vent at the top, would this give me accurate readings this way ? I could get a oven thermometer but that would mean lifting the lid to check the temp which is not good and I dont want to get a thermometer that requires drilling which would void the warranty also our options are limited here in the UK unless I order in from the USA.
Thanks
Thanks
Re: Thermometer Question
Welcome Dave !
You have a couple of options :
You can take a thermometer like this one from ProBBQ

And stick it thorugh the vent holes. You can even secure it from the inside via a cork or something.
If you want a digital, i would suggest the Maverick ET73.
You can monitor the food and grill temperature with its two probes at the same time
and it transmits the readings to a base station for up to 35 Meters distance.
Trouble with the digitals is, i wouldnt suggest to use them in Kettles or grill for indirect grilling.
They are made for Smokers usually and the probes or wires melt at around 400 degrees. You can get temperature spikes like that in a kettle
fairly easy, thats why i suggest the first thermometer for that use.

Thanks for the advice good idea that with the cork, 1 question though would the cork not burn and give off odours ?
Also where in Germany are you ? I work there often Its a great country.
Re: Thermometer Question
You won't need the cork but try it and see. Like Marco I like digital and am not worried about the warranty but I try and use a cheaper unit/probe on the Weber.
You can get a thermo for a smoker and pop it through the vent as well.

Re: Thermometer Question
I have a weber style digital device but the probe stopped working after just one session and apparentlty weber dont sell replacement probes. I notice however that the radio shack system that Dr Ky has is almost identical. are these available in the uk?
Re: Thermometer Question
Ya John I got it off eBay. I think there is another one on there that's ending soon. I also noticed a Weber one but I have had BAD luck with them also.
Re: Thermometer Question
Evening Gents,
Just for info really, I bought the Maverick ET73 from here, http://www.bbq-book.com/store/html/et-73.html I have had wing mirrors fitted to the unit, as that's the only way I'm looking back!

Re: Thermometer Question
The link that AWG posted, is probably the cheapest (not saying that AWG is tight or anything
).
