Midlands Regional BBQ Competition / Event Update

Post  All Weather Griller on Tue Feb 03, 2009 7:54 am

I have made contact with both Rother Valley and Clumber Park locations with a view to holding an event at one of these.

Rother Valley = http://www.rothervalley.f9.co.uk/

Clumber Park = http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-vh/w-visits/w-findaplace/w-clumber_park-2/

Both sites are keen to learn more about the event and we have meetings scheduled with them on the 13th Feb.

Watch this space!

************** Update **************

Cheffeeney and myself have had two meetings today with the venues above.

As it stands we have been granted permission to hold a BBQ Event at the Rother Valley Location, in addition Clumber Park have initially agreed to host an event also if we wish but this is pending further approvals.

Both meetings were exceptionally positive and after consideration John and I both feel that Rother Valley would be the best location. This is based on a number of factors... The main one being locality to facilities such a toilets, potential interest from other events on the same weekend and ability to pitch tents, caravans near the cooking areas.

Below is a link to some pictures of the location. We are looking at a weekend in September for convenience although the park hosts "Party in the Park" which has a walk through of approx 40,000 people on the 25/26 July and that was suggested to us (Thoughts welcome on this).

The provisional dates although are very tentative at this stage but could I get some initial feedback on if you would be interested in attending.

National Triathlon Weekend 6/7 June (Perhaps a little ambitious)

Hover Craft Weekend 13 /14 June (Perhaps a little ambitious)

Party in the Park Weekend 25/26 July (Suggested by the Park and Do-able)

Caravan and Camping Club Rally 5/6 September (Do-able)

Caravan Club Rally 18/20 September (Do-able)

At the Rother Valley location there is water sports facilities, cycling paths, scenic walks, bottle and can recycling facilties (In case you like a drink Laughing )

http://www.rothervalley.f9.co.uk/

You need to be aware these photos were taken today, the ground is still recovering from snow and ice, and the venue may in some pictures look a little boggy.

There is a golf course nearby if you fancy fetching some clubs!!!

Can you PLEASE post an expression of interest in this event and thoughts about dates.

Hi Adie,

Looks like a great location, personally I think The party in the park weekend would be ideal, raising awareness has to be part of any competition. I would ask the following questions.

Would we have access to electricity, if not what is their policy on generators.
Will water be available via standpipe or building etc.
Would they allow competitors to sell food to the public (with a % going back to the park)
Do they have a plan of the party in the park which would show the location we would be placed in.
Will they be promoting the BBQ comp along side their event?
How far away can people camp from cooking area (thinking security)

Hope this helps.

Hi Tobes,
Jennies are fine, water is available from both the boat house and the toilets and the location for camping is literally 20metres away across a single tarmac roadway.

If you google earth the corodinates above, the area where the cross is the area for competing, and slighlty south east of that is a grassed area with a footpath though it. This is where we can pitch up.

There are also showers we can use, but only whilst the boat house is open.

In terms of promotion we have explained that we aren't in this to make money and they would accomodate us, we would have to fund insurance but they wouldn't promote the event. The location is council owned and we would have to promote it ourselves.

As far as I am aware we can sell food for cost value only... not for profit. Council Policy!

Does this help?

Hi Andy,

I need to have a chat with Toby to determine if this will be a BBQS event or not but aside from that it looks like we will be going for the Party in the Park weekend.

It is highly likely that about 6-8 weeks prior to the event that we will be putting on a smoking masterclass for anyone that wants to attend from the local area. To raise interest prior to the event. John Feeney will be running that and their may "May" be a celebrity chef mooching around.

As it stands there isn't a huge interest on this forum about the midlands thing but that could be because its sometime off.

I am e-mail the Park Ranger tomorrow to detrmine how much notice I need to give him for the location he has offered as I don't want to commit to it if only three teams want to attend.

I'll let you know what is said.

Cheers

Adie

Hi Adie,

I tried calling you today (but only have your work number) I would like to take the venue and comp on under BBBQS, Looks like a great location. I get the impression people wont commit on here, although it will be well read.......... There are guys and girls on here that probably dont think they will be able to compete, but would probably love to give it a go, I think the BBBQS this year has to make sure people are aware that there is an abundance of adivce and no one has to worry about making mistakes, there are only a few teams in the UK that truly understand this style of BBQ I thknk its everyones intention to educate as well as compete............... hope that makes sense.
